John H. Rees Shareholder
John Rees, member of the board of directors of the law firm, helps clients find solutions to their business legal needs, particularly in a complex online business environment. He focuses on corporate and intellectual property issues, particularly relating to licensing and doing business on the internet. He is the chair of the law firm’s internet law and intellectual property practice group, and is the founder and past chair of the Utah State Bar Association’s Cyberlaw Section. He is also a member of the American Bar Association Cyberspace Law Committee. He is named in the 2010 edition of The Best Lawyers in America® for information technology law. John is a frequent lecturer and enjoys educating and training clients on how to solve their legal problems.
Drafted documents for and negotiated complex license agreements, including with multi-national banks, for software develop clients.
Drafted documents for and negotiated multiple license agreements for online databases, particularly for multiple listing services. Created form license agreement endorsed by National Association of REALTORS® and made available to its approximately 700 member multiple listing services.
Prosecuted hundreds of federal trademark applications, including defending opposition proceedings, and advised clients on the appropriate adoption and use of trademarks, and avoiding infringement.
Drafted and negotiated terms of use, online contracts, privacy policies, DMCA protection clauses, and other documents for online business providers.
Advised clients on avoiding intellectual property infringement, particularly in an online environment.
Drafted documents for and negotiated several mergers and acquisitions.
Drafted documents for and negotiated complex multi-million dollar multi-family housing federal low income housing tax credit transactions with several parties in each transaction.
Published several articles and made numerous presentations to national and local trade associations, client groups, and others.
